Environment USARenewable Energy Reaches Record Share of Electricity
The United States generated a record share of electricity from renewable sources in 2025, with wind, solar and other clean energy supplying 26% of the nation’s power.
“Renewables continue to grow,” said Patrick Finn, principal analyst at Wood Mackenzie. “Even with policy hurdles, the economics of wind and solar keep driving expansion.”
Renewable generation reached 1,162 terawatt-hours in 2025, a 10% increase from the previous year, enough electricity to power about 108 million homes. Solar and wind projects led the expansion, and in some months, renewables produced nearly one-third of all electricity. The momentum is expected to continue, with government estimates showing that 93% of new power capacity added to the grid in 2026 will come from wind, solar and battery storage.
