Animals VietnamRare Pheasant Returns Home After Decades of Conservation Effort
A major conservation partnership is preparing to return the Vietnam pheasant to the wild in Vietnam, offering a second chance for a species feared lost from its natural habitat.
“For Vietnam, the recovery of the Vietnam Pheasant is more than the return of a single species,” said Pham Tuan Anh, Director of Viet Nature Conservation Centre. “It represents our pride and responsibility in protecting our natural heritage.”
Twenty pheasants selected from European conservation breeding programmes will be transferred to Vietnam as the first step in a carefully planned reintroduction effort. Descended from a small founder population brought to Europe more than a century ago, the birds have been maintained through decades of international cooperation and genetic management. Following acclimatisation and breeding in Vietnam, future generations may eventually be released into protected forests within the species’ historic range. The project combines habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, scientific monitoring, and community engagement, making it one of the few global efforts to restore a species that is likely extinct in the wild.
