EnvironmentSociety Poland“Dry Man of Europe”s Plan to Save Water – Before It’s Too Late
Poland has one of the worst rates of water scarcity in Europe, affecting both land and people. But the nation is on a mission to improve water availability and make sure taps keep flowing.
Known as the “dry man of Europe”, Poland is facing back-to-back droughts, causing a reduction of crop yields with some towns even running out of water. So the government has come up with a six-year strategy to save the country before climate change makes things worse.
“It is the first comprehensive plan to counteract the effects of droughts in Poland,” says Daniel Kociolek, spokesman for Wody Polskie (Polish Waters), a state organization founded in 2018 to manage water resources.
The strategy will run from 2021 to 2027 with a plan to save water through investments, including building 30 new water reservoirs, as well as through public campaigns.
