Environment The CaribbeanSeven Caribbean Countries Start New Decade with Ban on Single-Use Plastic
As of the 1st of January, seven Caribbean countries have begun implementing the ban of importing and using single-use plastic and polystyrene, to help save marine species and underwater ecosystems from ocean pollution.
Around 5 billion petroleum-based plastic bags are used and disposed of each year – and ten out of the world’s thirty largest polluters of such plastic are in the Caribbean.
The countries implementing the ban – part of the Bahamas Environmental Protection Act 2019 – are Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago and the Bahamas.
