Corona: Stars Meet Online to Help Indigenous Tribes in the Amazon

Hollywood stars, celebrity musicians and environmentalists met online for a fundraising event aimed at protecting indigenous groups in the Amazon. The event was streamed live to raise money for the Amazon Emergency Fund.

The event was hosted by Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin, featuring stars Morgan Freeman, Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand, musicians Carlos Santana and Peter Gabriel and environmentalists such as Jane Goodall.

Indigenous tribes in the Amazon could become extinct due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with indigenous leader Jose Gregorio Diaz calling the Artists United for Amazonia: Protecting the Protectors event an “economic and humanitarian SOS” for the Amazon.

The fundraiser kicked off in April to help tribes respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, and organizers are now hoping to raise around $5 million over the next two months to pay for food, supplies and emergency evacuations for the indigenous tribes most affected by the virus.
