Hawaii becomes the sixth state to put an end to cosmetic animal testing, as a growing number of customers across the United States ask for cruelty-free beauty products.
“People in Hawaii and across the nation care about animals and are increasingly looking for cosmetic products that are cruelty-free,” says senator Mike Gabbard who introduced the bill in 2018. “By moving forward with this legislation, we are doing the right thing without sacrificing the necessary product testing needed to protect human health.”
The Hawaii Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act (HCFCA) will prevent animals from suffering from experimental trials which can be unfair and painful. As of January 1, 2022, new products tested on animals will no longer be on Hawaii’s shelves. So far California, Nevada, Illinois, Virginia, and Maryland have banned animal testing for beauty products, and the states of New Jersey, Rhode Island, Oregon, and New York are considering joining in the fight against animal cruelty. More and more customers are demanding animal-cruelty-free cosmetics, and it is expected that the vegan cosmetics market will reach $21 billion by 2027.
