One-Man Ambulance Service Saves Lives with Rickshaw – for Free

76-year-old Harjinder Singh helps save lives in Delhi, India, using his auto-rickshaw as a free ambulance service to transport road accident victims straight to the nearest hospitals.

Statistics have shown that India faced 149,000 road accident deaths in 2018 alone. So, when the police found out about Singh’s act of kindness, they appointed him as traffic police warden. He’s also been given commendation certificates for all the many lives he’s saved to date.

Singh even goes so far as to contact family members of victims to keep them updated. “I shall continue helping people for the rest of my life,” Singh proudly says. “I believe, no one should lose a valuable life due to my negligence. Every time I help someone, they become my family and in return, I receive lots of blessings.”

With his humble approach, the Good Samaritan is challenging the country’s system, which currently does not have an established medical emergency response service leading to many avoidable deaths. But the government has been taking action into reducing road accidents and has recently put into effect regulations that will make a difference with the new Motor Vehicles Amendment: drivers will now face a heavy fine for traffic violations such as speeding, drunk driving, disobeying traffic signals and not having seatbelts buckled while driving.
