Environmental Breakthrough: Less Deforestation, Record Low Emissions

Brazil recorded a significant climate milestone last year, with new data showing a sharp fall in emissions driven by dramatically reduced deforestation across the country.

“This shows what happens when environmental protection is taken seriously again,” Brazil’s Climate Observatory said, highlighting the renewed control over forest loss.

Emissions fell 16.7% year-on-year, the country’s biggest drop since 2009, after strengthened action against illegal deforestation steadily reduced Amazon forest clearance. The government has pledged to achieve zero deforestation by 2030. However, observers note ongoing debate over broader climate-related decisions, including support for a large offshore oil project near the Amazon River.
