Middle Class Surpasses Poverty for First Time

Mexico reached a historic turning point in 2024 as the number of people in the middle class exceeded those living in poverty for the first time on record.

“This proves that our economic and social policies lifted millions out of poverty and raised living standards across society,” said Jesús Ramírez, director of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s Council of Advisers.

Between 2018 and 2024, poverty fell from 41.9% to 29.6% of the population, while the middle class grew from 27.2% to 39.6%, indicating that approximately 12 million people moved into middle-income status. National and World Bank data show the shift was driven by sustained social investment, which boosted consumption and economic stability and placed Mexico among Latin American countries with the fastest middle-class growth.
