Soon You Can Drink Your Soda out of Bottles Made from Ocean Plastic Waste

The Coca-Cola Company has unveiled 300 sample bottles made using recovered and recycled plastics retrieved from the Mediterranean Sea and beaches.

Coca-Cola – who partnered on the new venture with Ioniqa Technologies, Indorama Ventures, and Mares Circulares – says that the sample is the first of its kind thanks to enhanced recycling technologies allowing for damaged marine plastics to be successfully recycled for food and drink packaging.

“Enhanced recycling technologies are enormously exciting, not just for us but for industry and society at large,” says Bruno van Gompel, technical and supply chain director of Coca-Cola in Western Europe. “They accelerate the prospect of a closed-loop economy for plastic, which is why we are investing behind them. As these begin to scale, we will see all kinds of used plastics returned, as good as new, not just once but again and again, diverting waste streams from incineration and landfill.”
