New Bridge Connects Farmers to Markets and Opportunity

A newly built bridge over the Sewa River in Sierra Leone has transformed travel by replacing a slow ferry crossing with a safe five-minute drive, enabling year-round access to markets, schools and essential services.

“We used to watch our produce spoil, and people even drowned trying to cross. Now our lives are easier,” said Thomas Moriba, youth leader from the Gendema community.

The 125-metre Gendema Bridge now supports thousands of residents across multiple chiefdoms, strengthening an economic corridor linking northern and southeastern regions and opening trade routes toward Liberia, helping farmers transport harvests reliably, reduce post-harvest losses and increase household incomes.
