New Tech Promises Resiliently Clean Water

Startups in the United States and Norway are developing desalination systems that could make freshwater production cheaper, safer, and more resilient in regions facing growing water shortages.

“I don’t know whether the cost gaps can be solved, but I bet that the technology gaps could be solved,” said Megan Mauter, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Stanford University, highlighting optimism that new approaches can improve access to reliable water supplies as drought conditions intensify.

Companies including OceanWell, Flocean, and Vital Lyfe are testing alternatives to traditional coastal desalination plants, including underwater systems and portable purification devices. OceanWell says its subsea technology can reduce energy use by about 40% by using natural ocean pressure. At the same time, Vital Lyfe recently launched a portable desalination unit priced at $750, following a $24 million seed round. The innovations aim to expand freshwater access, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen water infrastructure against climate pressures and disruptions.
