Society TanzaniaBetter Access to Water and Sanitation to Nearly Half a Million People
The expanding and upgrading of a water supply and sanitation system in Northern Tanzania will significantly improve access to safe water and hygiene for close to half a million citizens, and enhance sanitation services to more than 150,000 people through a variety of solutions.
“This project is about improving lives – bringing clean water and better sanitation to families in Mwanza and beyond. It shows what we can achieve when we work together towards shared goals. This is the spirit of Team Europe and Global Gateway – investing in people, infrastructure, and long-term development,” says EU Ambassador to Tanzania and the East African Community, H.E. Christine Grau.
By launching the Butima Water Treatment Plant as part of $176 million Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation project jointly financed by the French Development Agency, the European Investment Bank, the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund and the Government of Tanzania investing $88 million, $58 million, $12 million, and $19 million respectively. Some 450,000 citizens of Mwanza and its environs – the satellite towns of Misungwi, Magu, Lamadi, Bukoda, and Musoma – located in Northern Tanzania, will benefit from 44,000 cubic meters of water per day. Innovative, simplified sewage systems tailored to Mwanza’s challenging terrain will enhance sanitation services for more than 150,000 people.
