Society Europe & Central AsiaChild Poverty Halved Across These Regions
Child poverty across Europe and Central Asia has dropped by nearly half in the past decade, marking one of the region’s most significant social achievements.
“Fully eradicating child poverty remains a challenge, particularly for those living in the remaining hard-to-reach pockets of deprivation,” noted UNICEF and World Bank experts in their joint report, highlighting how regional gains must now reach the most vulnerable.
Between 2014 and 2024, the share of children living on less than $8.30 a day fell from 18.8% to 10.2%, with progress seen in every subregion — a testament to years of investment in education, social protection, and community resilience. The most dramatic reductions were recorded in the Western Balkans, where child poverty fell from 21.7% to 8.4%, and in EU countries, where it declined to just 2.6%. New child grants, rural electrification, and coordinated strategies like the European Child Guarantee have transformed opportunities for millions. With continued commitment and innovation, the region is moving closer to a future where no child is left behind.
