Urban Rooftop Mountain Gives Danes Skiing Delight

The roof of an environmentally friendly waste-to-energy plant in Copenhagen, Denmark has been transformed to an urban mountain, boasting a 450-metre-long artificial ski slope with “magic carpets” that transport skiers to the top.

The CopenHill urban mountain features many more activities in addition to the impressive ski slope: a 490-metre-long hiking and running trail, sustainability talks, live shows and social events, as well as the world’s tallest artificial climbing wall reaching staggering height of 85 metres.

Visitors and tourists can also relax at the rooftop café, bar and terrace, or simply enjoy the beautiful city view atop the new Copenhagen landmark.

“As a power plant, CopenHill is so clean that we have been able to turn its building mass into the bedrock of the social life of the city – its facade is climbable, its roof is hikeable and its slopes are skiable” says Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, the Danish architecture firm that designed CopenHill.
