Electric Hydrofoil Boats Promise Faster, Cleaner Urban Transport

A new generation of electric hydrofoil boats is transforming water travel by lifting vessels above the surface, dramatically reducing energy use and offering quieter, low-emission urban transport, according to trials in Sweden.

“Land and air are going electric, maritime is the obvious next step,” said Sampriti Bhattacharyya, founder of maritime technology company Navier.

By combining electric drivetrains, advanced carbon-fibre materials and real-time digital sensors, hydrofoiling vessels can cut energy consumption by up to 80% compared with conventional boats, while cities testing passenger ferries expect faster services, lower operating costs and expanded use of waterways as alternatives to congested roads.
