Volunteers Set Sail to Remove Plastic From the Oceans

A British initiative is setting sail to remove plastic waste from the polluted areas of England’s Cornish coast – with the help of volunteers – that can’t be accessed by foot.

The Clean Ocean Sailing initiative – which first kicked off in 2017 – was started by Steve Green and Monika Herlová, who use their 112-year-old boat to both remove plastic pollution and as their home where they live with their one-year-old son, Simon as well as their dog, Rosie.

“I was caught by a freak wind and washed up on Annet,” he said, referring to the one of the islands of the remote Isles of Scilly and how the Clean Ocean Sailing project began. “It’s only a mile across, but I ended up having to spend a few days there. On the southwest of the island, it is six-foot deep of all sorts of plastic flotsam and jetsam — full of dead or dying seabirds and dolphins.”

Now, the team has planned a 60-mile trip in Scilly, with local businesses donating fruit and other supplies to help support them on their mission.
