Government Speeds Up Green Energy Goals, for the Sake of the Climate

Germany is speeding up its renewable energy production and in order to reach its goals of producing almost 100% renewable power supply by 2035 and of being climate-neutral by 2045, the new government is investing massively in solar installations and wind plants, off and onshore.

“It must be clear to all ministries involved and all levels – be it federal or state – that the expansion of renewable energies is the order of the day, not only for climate protection but also to become less dependent on fossil energy imports,” says Kerstin Andreae, head of Germany’s energy industry association BDEW.

Measures are taken as part of a comprehensive program of climate action for the country to liberate itself from fossil fuel imports. Authorities want 80% renewable power – some 600 terawatt-hours – by 2030 and close to 100% of green electricity by 2035. Onshore wind capacity should reach 115GW by 2030. As of offshore, additions are made to reach at least 30GW by 2030, 40GW by 3025, and 70GW by 2045. Solar photovoltaic installations are scheduled to amount to 22GW per year starting in 2026 and the total solar capacity should reach a whopping 215GW by the end of the decade.
