Here, Child Marriage is Nearly Eradicated

India’s Assam state has so far effectively decreased child marriage cases by 81% in 20 of the state’s 35 districts.

The success is largely attributed to the Assam government’s strong legal action against child marriages, with current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vowing to eradicate the practice across the state entirely by 2026.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised the Assam government for its “vigorous and relentless” efforts to eliminate child marriage. Modi is now asking that other chief ministers visit Assam state first-hand to see how they have successfully eradicated a large percentage of child marriages, and then take that knowledge back to their state and emulate it. Though the work is far from over, Assam state is successfully paving the way for India’s fight against child marriages.
