Society MexicoHistoric Milestone: 13.4 Million Out of Poverty Here
Mexico has achieved a historic milestone: through sweeping welfare reforms, Mexico lifted 13.4 million people out of poverty between 2018 and 2024, reducing national poverty by nearly 26%, while extreme poverty dropped by about 2 million lives.
“For the good of all – first the poor’ is not just a slogan, but a reality in Mexico,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum, celebrating the achievement as transformative and deeply meaningful.
These gains stemmed from a dramatic tripling of the minimum wage (from 88.40 to 278.80 pesos per day), and expanded universal cash-transfer programs reaching vulnerable groups such as pensioners, apprentices, and farmers. Access to food, housing, and social security improved markedly, giving millions a stronger safety net. While challenges remain—such as widening gaps in healthcare access—Mexico’s bold reform offers a powerful lesson in how inclusive policy can lift entire communities and reshape a nation’s future.
