Life-Saving Earthquake Detection In Our Pockets

Android phones have become an unusual yet effective earthquake warning system.

The Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system was launched back in 2020 and is now on by default on most Android phones. Since its launch, the system has alerted to about 1,300 earthquakes with only three errors recorded.

The system is designed in a way that the phones closest to the epicentre will be the first to pick up on the shaking, meaning the people who receive the first alerts may or may not have time to do anything about it. However, the initial alert then extends to nearby Androids, allowing time for others who may be in the path to get to safety potentially. The system is able to send out one of two alerts, either: “be aware” or “take action.” AEA is currently in place in 98 countries, with a total of 2.5 billion people being able to receive the earthquake warnings. Of course, the life-saving system comes for free on any purchased Android phone.
