EnvironmentSociety The WorldMilestone Progress in Global Water and Sanitation Access
The Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership (GWSP) is transforming how the world manages water, helping millions gain clean water and sanitation while strengthening climate resilience.
“In just eight years, we’ve built a global framework that turns water knowledge into action,” said a GWSP spokesperson. “Our work supports countries in ensuring water for people, food, and the planet.”
In Fiscal Year 2025, GWSP influenced $47.9 billion in active World Bank water lending across 90 countries, including $12.46 billion in new projects — 11 of them in fragile or conflict-affected regions. Its programs directly improved water access for 19.06 million people, sanitation for 12.09 million, and risk mitigation for 7.16 million individuals. Climate action was central: 81% of new water projects included co-benefits for climate, and all featured measurable climate indicators. The Partnership also strengthened institutional capacity in 51 countries, guided 45 nations in sustainable water policy, and helped ensure gender inclusion. 70% of new projects created skilled jobs for women, and 77% met gender targets, up from 73% the year before. Together, these efforts place GWSP at the forefront of delivering water security and sustainable development for a changing planet.
