The Northeast region of Brazil has accounted for over one-third of the country’s recent reduction in poverty. A powerful sign that social policies are reaching the people who need them most.
“The Northeast’s share of the national poverty reduction between 2022 and 2024 is estimated at 37.4%, pointing to its central role in the country’s progress,” experts say.
Between 2022 and 2024, the proportion of people in the Northeast living below the poverty line decreased from 57.5% to 39.6%, representing a 17.9 percentage point drop. That means millions of Brazilians in the region have pulled themselves out of poverty. In extreme poverty (earning up to R$218 monthly), approximately 3.1 million people in the Northeast surpassed this threshold, representing 60.7% of the national total of 5.1 million people who escaped extreme poverty. These shifts demonstrate that focused efforts and public investment can lead to significant, rapid social change and offer hope for sustained momentum toward equality.
