Environment IndiaProtecting Coasts, Protecting Communities
A new World Bank initiative will help protect coastal ecosystems and provide new livelihood opportunities to communities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, India, thereby strengthening resilience and economic inclusion.
“This Project will help states tap into private sector sources to mitigate the impacts of plastic pollution and to foster eco-tourism … creating both environmental and economic benefits,” said Paul Procee, Acting Country Director for India at the World Bank.
The project, part of the SHORE program (Sustainable Coastal and Ocean Resource Efficiency), brings USD 212.64 million in funding to the two states. It aims to help 100,000 people get better skills, training, and opportunities. About 70,000 individuals, including many women, will be supported in sectors such as sustainable tourism. The plan will also protect 30,000 hectares of seascapes through mangrove restoration, dune recovery, and protection of coral and species. With its focus on reducing plastic waste, conserving ecosystems, and creating jobs, this project is a powerful example of climate action grounded in social uplift and ecological care.
