Cheaper, faster, more sustainable: A team from the University of Maine in the United States has built the world’s largest solid 3D-printed object in record time, using the world’s largest prototype polymer 3D printer – breaking three world records at once!
The 25-foot-long boat, 3Dirigo, was constructed within three days and according to a UMaine press release, it is only one fourth the maximum size the university’s 3D printer could potentially print.
UMaine is planning to further advance the 3D printer’s capabilities, collaborating with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory – the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest science and energy laboratory – to produce new biobased materials that sustainably facilitate the 3D printing of structurally complex systems.
