According to a new report, renewable energy sources hit an all-time high in 2020, with more than 80% of new electricity-generated projects being renewables – and the growth of green energy doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
“These numbers tell a remarkable story of resilience and hope,” says Francesco La Camera, director-general of the International Renewable Energy Agency. “Despite the challenges and the uncertainty of 2020, renewable energy emerged as a source of undeniable optimism for a better, more equitable, resilient, clean, and just future. Costs are falling, clean-tech markets are growing, and never before have the benefits of the energy transition been so clear.”
Last year alone, 91% of new renewable projects were wind and solar-generated. Since 2019, solar generation shot up by 22% to 127 gigawatts – and as for wind generation, the added gigawatts went up from 58 in 2019 to 111 in 2020.
