Society GeorgiaHistoric Parliamentary Law Promises More Democracy in Georgia
Georgia has taken a major leap towards democratic progress after the parliament passed a new law that will prevent any one political party from having a disproportionate amount of power.
“We warmly congratulate the Parliament of Georgia on today’s adoption of Constitutional amendments designed to increase parliamentary pluralism and allow for a more representative legislature,” say U.S. and European diplomats in a statement.
The electoral reform, one year in the making, will set rules that prevent a party from overrepresenting the nation. Where once the parliamentary seats where split in half between individuals running districts and parties with national support, this fall’s elections will bring the distribution of seats more into line with the national vote results: 120 of the 150 seats will be assigned to the nationally supported parties, with the remaining 30 going to individuals in district races.
