EnvironmentHealth ChinaCleaner Transport Cuts Air Pollution and Saves Lives
People in China are experiencing cleaner air and improved health outcomes as the rapid adoption of new energy vehicles reduces harmful urban pollution.
“These findings highlight pollutant-specific disparities and socio-economic inequalities in NEV-related benefits,” said Meng Gao, Environmental Scientist and study co-author, noting the importance of expanding cleaner transport systems more widely.
By 2023, new energy vehicles were linked to a 23.8% reduction in fine particulate pollution and a 30.67% reduction in carbon monoxide levels. The improvements were associated with preventing an estimated 262,000 non-accidental deaths and 75,000 all-cause deaths. The findings also suggest that expanding electric transport, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles and in less-developed regions, could bring broader health and environmental benefits.
