You Want to Buy a Car in California? It Will Have to Be Electric (15 Years From Now)

The governor of California has issued a new executive order: by 2035, all new passenger vehicles sold in the American state will have to be electric. This decision aligns with the state goal to become carbon neutral by 2045.

“This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change,” says California governor Gavin Newsom. “Our cars shouldn’t make wildfires worse—and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn’t melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines.”

Californians are the largest buyers of electric cars in the U.S., and the state plans on adding five million zero-emission vehicles on its roads by 2030. Countries and cities alike are planning to phase out gas cars. For example, the UK has decided to move up its deadline from 2040 to 2030, and Amsterdam will ban diesel and gas cars within the city limits by 2030.
