Farmer Picks Up Tools to Build a Road for Neighbors

Nicholas Muchemi, a 44-year-old farmer in Kenya, had enough of watching his neighbors struggle to get to town: children needed a better way to go to school and mothers wanted a faster route to the market. So he grabbed his tools and built a road.

Villagers in rural Kaganda, Kenya quickly began using the new quarter-mile road, avoiding the usual long and tedious walks to the town center. News of Muchemi’s selfless deed circulated all over social media and reached the local government, who installed a new roof on his home and offered Muchemi a cow as a token of their appreciation, promising to also gravel and maintain his road.

“I feel overjoyed that I did work that makes everyone happy,” Muchemi said. “Even the whole country is happy and that makes me feel joy.”

Muchemi plans to stay inspired and extend the road even further for his neighbors.
