Too Much Carbon Heating Up the Climate? Use It as Fuel, Dutch Say

Rotterdam The Hague Airport in the Netherlands is working on an experiment that uses a renewable alternative to the usual fossil-based jet fuel that can pave the way towards a carbon-neutral aviation industry.

The plan is to commercially produce the world’s first jet fuel partly made from carbon dioxide (CO2), an operation that could result in a much lower emission of particles and carbon by capturing the CO2 gas from the air.

“The beauty of direct air capture is that the CO2 is reused again, and again, and again,” says Louise Charles, from Climeworks, the company providing the direct air capture technology.

The goal is to sustainably produce 1,000 liters of jet fuel a day using the airport’s onsite solar panels, starting 2021.

“This is the future of aviation,” says Oskar Meijerink, from SkyNRG, a company focused on sustainable aviation fuel solutions and partnering with the airport on the renewable jet fuel experiment.
