A Hopeful Comeback for This Eagle

Recent Harpy Eagle sightings in areas where the bird hasn’t been seen for decades are a hopeful sign that the species may slowly but surely be recovering.

The species, currently classified as “vulnerable,” has experienced a sharp decline in Central and South America due to deforestation and persecution. The latest sightings, however, offer hope for its survival in regions where it had nearly vanished.

Recently, the Harpy Eagle was observed in both Mexico and Argentina – countries at the extreme edges of the species’ historical range. One confirmed sighting reported seeing a bird with its parents, which suggests an active breeding territory – the first evidence of such in decades. Conservation groups and local communities are collaborating to identify and support active breeding sites, while also raising funds for ongoing support. The most recent sightings are only the second recorded in Mexico since 1998.
