Welcome Back, Bluefin Tuna!

Cornwall’s seas in England are buzzing again. Atlantic bluefin tuna, once rare here, are now showing up every summer to feast and thrive.

Dan Barrios-O’Neill from Cornwall Wildlife Trust describes their comeback as “a real sign of hope in a rapidly changing world.”

After disappearing for decades, the tuna’s return is thanks in part to stronger fishing rules, better fishery management, and a boom in their favourite prey like sardines and anchovies. Some of these giant ocean predators weigh over 600 pounds, turning Cornish waters into a seasonal feeding ground where they return year after year. Their presence is not just good for the ecosystem; it’s also sparking economic opportunities for coastal communities and showing that when nature is protected, it can bounce back in remarkable ways.
