Society Sri LankaLandmines Cleared, Lives and Land Restored
In Sri Lanka, the clearance of 300,000 landmines marks a decisive step toward healing and renewal after decades of civil conflict.
“This achievement will help restore resources for resettlement and peaceful living. It also gives us confidence that the natural life of the mine-affected areas can be bravely rebuilt,” said Subramaniyam Muralithran, Government Agent of Kilinochchi.
Once among the most contaminated regions in the world, the country’s north is now returning to safety and opportunity, with 120 km² of land reclaimed for farming, housing, and tourism. The HALO Trust’s two-decade mission has enabled over 280,000 displaced people to return home. As clearance continues, the once-war-torn north is emerging as a symbol of resilience. Its fertile fields, historic temples, and pristine beaches are now ready to welcome both locals rebuilding their futures and visitors discovering Sri Lanka’s hidden beauty.
