Technology ChinaA New Battery Breakthrough Could Make Clean Energy Much Cheaper
Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited, based in China, has secured a record 60 GWh order for sodium-ion batteries, signalling that a cheaper and more abundant alternative to lithium is ready for large-scale use.
“This could be a ‘DeepSeek moment’ for the global energy storage industry,” said Davis Zhang, senior executive at Suzhou Hazardtex, pointing to the potential for dramatically lower costs and faster adoption.
The three-year deal with Beijing HyperStrong Technology is the largest ever for sodium-ion batteries and equals roughly half of CATL’s entire 2025 energy storage output. Unlike lithium, sodium is around 1,000 times more abundant, making it far cheaper and easier to scale. The batteries also offer long lifespans of over 15,000 cycles, high efficiency, and compatibility with existing infrastructure — meaning they can be deployed quickly without rebuilding supply chains. As global demand for energy storage surges, this breakthrough could significantly reduce costs, accelerate renewable energy adoption, and remove one of the biggest barriers to a cleaner energy system.
