Society UgandaMajor Investment Expands Access to Clean Water
Uganda has launched a $1.8 billion national programme to expand access to clean water and sanitation, helping millions of people gain more reliable services while strengthening resilience to climate-related challenges.
“The strategy is expected to support infrastructure expansion, improve public health outcomes, create jobs and strengthen Uganda’s broader economic development goals,” the National Water and Sewerage Corporation said as it unveiled the five-year plan.
The initiative aims to increase the number of people served from 19.5 million to 26.2 million by 2030 and expand water connections to nearly 1.3 million. It also seeks to reduce water losses due to leaks and ageing infrastructure from 34% to 28%, thereby improving efficiency and service reliability. Alongside expanding access to clean water and modern sanitation, the plan includes measures to protect water sources and strengthen infrastructure against droughts, flooding and other climate impacts. The investment forms part of a broader effort to improve public health, support economic growth and build more resilient communities across the country.
