Environment South AfricaTechnology training strengthens wildlife conservation across Africa
A pioneering technology training programme is equipping conservation professionals with practical tools to protect wildlife, reduce human-animal conflict and strengthen nature reserves across Africa.
“The learnings from this course can make a big difference to the people and animals of Tsavo,” said Duncan Kanyakera of the Taita Taveta Wildlife Conservancies Association, which supports conservancies and ranches across Kenya’s Tsavo landscape.
Launched in July 2025 by the Connected Conservation Foundation (CCF), the 10-module programme has already attracted 680 participants who completed at least one module, with 16 conservation professionals from 11 African countries selected for hands-on training in South Africa. Participants learned to use and maintain drones, camera traps, sensors, solar power, communications systems and mapping tools, building local expertise for technology that has helped protect nearly 10 million hectares of land. A second practical course is planned for early 2027, while five participants from the first group will receive internships and/or hardware donations.
