Village Volunteers Strengthen Nutrition and Maternal Care

Thousands of trained village volunteers are helping mothers and young children access better nutrition and healthcare in Cambodia, improving prospects for healthier development.

“When mothers receive proper nutrition and care, their children are more likely to grow healthy, learn well, and break the cycle of poverty,” said Vy Hing, Council Member for Women and Children in Ke Chong Commune.

More than 6,600 Village Health Support Groups have been trained across nine provinces to reach pregnant women and families with children under two, focusing on the crucial first 1,000 days from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday. Volunteers provide nutrition guidance, encourage pregnancy check-ups and vaccinations, and connect families with health centres. In one commune, every mother has delivered at a health facility since 2021, while monthly visits to a local health centre are projected to rise from 100–200 before the programme to 500–600 in 2026.
