Homicides Fall to Lowest Level in Over a Decade

Mexico recorded its least violent August since 2015, with daily homicides falling by 53% compared with September 2024 and declining across nearly the entire country.

“The reduction in homicides doesn’t mean the job is done,” said Omar García Harfuch, Mexico’s Security Minister, emphasising the need for continued efforts to improve public safety.

The average daily number of homicides fell from 86.9 in September 2024 to 40.8 in August 2026, a 32.1% reduction from August 2025. Homicides declined in 30 of the country’s 32 states, while the preliminary annualised homicide rate dropped to 12.9 per 100,000 people, down 38.6% year on year. High-impact crimes, including kidnappings, violent robberies and extortion, also fell by 39% compared with October 2024. Since then, authorities have seized more than 34,000 firearms and arrested over 67,000 people suspected of serious crimes, strengthening efforts to improve public safety nationwide.
