One of the UK’s busiest shopping streets will become a pedestrian-friendly destination, creating a greener, safer, and more welcoming public space in central London.
“I’m excited to see my bold vision for Oxford Street really coming to life next month as we start going traffic-free,” says Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London.
From 26 October 2026, nearly one kilometre of Oxford Street, stretching from Orchard Street to Great Portland Street, will be closed to buses, taxis, bicycles and other vehicles. The transformation will introduce new seating and safety measures, with temporary installations allowing planners to gather feedback before developing permanent improvements. The project aims to turn the famous shopping destination into a vibrant public space for retail, leisure and cultural events, with the potential for further pedestrianisation in the future.
