City Records Safest Summer for Gun Violence and Murders

New York City, United States, recorded its safest summer for shootings and murders, reaching historic lows and marking significant progress in public safety.

“This progress is only possible because of the extraordinary work of the men and women of the NYPD,” says New York Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, expressing gratitude for their commitment to keeping the city safe.

Between June and August 2026, the city recorded 195 shooting incidents, 249 shooting victims and 66 murders, all the lowest summer figures on record. Major crime fell by 6.2% during the first eight months of the year, with more than 5,000 fewer reported offences than in 2025. August also saw no murders, shootings or rapes in the subway system, while public housing recorded zero murders and historic lows in gun violence and robberies. The improvements follow targeted violence-reduction efforts, although felony assaults and confirmed hate crimes increased during the first eight months of the year.
