Society AfricaAverage Incomes More Than Double Across Nine Countries
Average incomes have more than doubled since 1990 in nine African countries, accompanied by falling extreme poverty and child mortality rates.
Mauritius, Egypt, Cape Verde, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Mozambique have all recorded substantial economic growth, demonstrating the potential for rising incomes to improve living standards.
Across all nine countries, average income per person has increased by more than 100% since 1990. During the same period, both the proportion of people living in extreme poverty and child mortality rates declined in every country. Although economic progress remains uneven across Africa, these achievements highlight the long-term potential of sustained growth to improve living conditions and reduce poverty.
