A 7-acre lot in Atlanta, United States, was recently transformed to a food forest, providing locals with free organic fruits, nuts and vegetables.
Atlanta purchased the land for around $150,000 through a conservation fund, and the city voted for the public park transformation in opposion to developing the vacant old farm into townhouses.
Atlanta, where there is a vast amount of “food deserts” and citizens living far from fresh produce, plans to create more food forests such as this one. The new park already has a vegetable garden planted, as well as more than 100 fruit trees, and aims to be fully transformed by 2020 with walking trails, compositing facilities, a rainwater collection system and a home for bees to pollinate.
