Faster, more affordable internet now reaches 88% of the population, expanding access to jobs, education, businesses and digital services across the Federated States of Micronesia.
“Quality internet and fast speeds are very crucial for the company. I can sell a shirt from this shop to anywhere in the world,” said Acer Apis, founder of BRDFRT Co in Pohnpei.
Between 2014 and 2025, internet use increased twenty-fold from 2% to nearly 40% of the population, while entry-level fixed broadband prices fell 99%, from $65 to $0.78 per Mbps per month. More than 100,000 people have benefited, half of them women. Over 1,500 kilometres of new submarine fibre-optic infrastructure now connects major islands, while satellite technology extends coverage to remote communities where fibre is impractical. New competition has brought additional providers into the market, and ongoing investment in nationwide fibre, digital identification and payments aims to create further opportunities for businesses, public services and employment.
