A pioneering electronic eye implant has enabled patients who were completely blind to read again — a medical milestone in restoring sight through artificial vision.
“In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era,” said Mr. Mahi Muqit, associate professor at the University College London’s Institute of Ophthalmology. “Regaining the ability to read improved patients’ mood, confidence, and independence.”
The PRIMA implant, developed by Science Corporation, utilises AI-powered glasses that convert visual scenes into electrical signals transmitted to the brain, thereby recreating vision in individuals blinded by macular degeneration. In clinical trials, 84% of participants could recognise letters and words again; a breakthrough bringing hope to millions living without sight.
