Are Two- and Three-Wheelers Becoming a Preferred Mode of Transport?

The use of electric two- and three-wheelers is a trend that isn’t slowing down, and sales have been increasing rapidly between 2016 and 2021, mainly in China, where manufacturing such vehicles is simple and cheap.

In 2021, a total of 9.5 million electric two- and three-wheelers have been registered. Between 2015 and 2021, there was a 25% increase in sales of such vehicles per year. As of 2021, they account for more than half the global market.

In Vietnam, 230,000 electric two- and three-wheelers were sold in 2021; in India, that number reached 300,000. In comparison, in Europe, two- and three-wheelers accounted for 5% of the market in 2021, with 87,000. Scooter companies like Niu and Gogoro – the former is Beijing-based and the latter, Taiwan-based – focus solely on two- and three-wheelers. The market continues to attract new investment, and a large electric two- and three-wheeler factory – one of the world’s largest – is set to open soon in India.
