“Best Before” Dates on Fruits and Veggies… Have Expired!

Across the United Kingdom, a chain of supermarkets is eliminating expiration dates on hundreds of products, mainly fruits, and vegetables, in a drive to encourage customers to reduce food waste.

“Now more than ever it’s important to help our customers to reduce their food waste,” states Damon Johnson, Morrisons’ head of technical produce and horticulture. “We hope by removing dates from our produce lines, changing our messaging on packs, and by providing our customers with advice on storage, we can support households in extending the life of their food and save customers money this Christmas.”

In January 2022, Morrisons eliminated expiration dates on most of its store-brand dairy milk. This time around, close to 200 fruits and vegetables will no longer have “display until” date labels. A code system will remain in use for some fruits and veggies so employees can keep track of stock, but not bananas, pineapples, and watermelons. In 2023, Morrisons’ initiative will expand to more perishable fruits typically pre-packed like grapes, berries, and stone fruits. Since expiration dates are arbitrary, customers are invited to use their five senses – plus their common sense – to evaluate if a product has gone bad or not.
