Bionic Arms Turn Disabled Kids into Superheroes with the Help of Brain Control

Startup company Bioniks is developing 3D-printed customizable bionic arms that help children cope with their lost limbs – while feeling like a superhero!

Founded by two mechatronics engineers, Anas Niaz, 26, and Ovais Hussain Qureshi, 28, Bioniks is the first of its kind in Pakistan with affordable and lightweight bionic arms that are superhero-themed. Each arm costs merely USD 2,000 – compared to as high as USD 50,000 – to make it more accessible to those in need. The first 10 bionic arms were even free of charge.

“Our goal is to make bionic arms accessible to all in need especially children,” explains Qureshi, adding, “Kids who were often asked, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ are now the centre of attention. People are fascinated, ‘wow that’s such a cool arm! How does it work?’ This change is itself a major boost.”

40 million people around the world are affected by limb loss, one million of them in Pakistan. Bioniks is transforming people’s disability into strength with robotic limbs for both adults and children as young as five years of age.

“With our accessible, affordable and plug-and-play devices, we aim to make lives easier and comfortable one bionic limb at a time,” says Qureshi.
