Cell Energy Breakthrough: Regenerative Medicine Milestone

Scientists in the United States have shown that damaged cells can be re-energised by boosting their mitochondria, offering a promising new route to treat ageing and degenerative diseases.

“We have trained healthy cells to share their spare batteries with weaker ones,” said Akhilesh K. Gaharwar, biomedical engineer, describing how the approach restores vitality without genetic modification or drugs.

In laboratory experiments, stem cells were turned into miniature “mitochondria factories” using nanoflower-shaped particles, doubling their mitochondrial output and transferring these energy-producing structures to nearby damaged cells. The rejuvenated cells showed clear recovery, providing proof of concept for therapies targeting conditions linked to mitochondrial decline, including heart, muscle and neurodegenerative disorders, and laying groundwork for future regenerative treatments.
