Over the years, British rock band Coldplay has implemented many sustainability initiatives designed to reduce its carbon footprint, and their latest one is having the vinyl edition of their new album made from recycled plastic bottles.
In a world first, vinyl copies of the group’s 10th studio album, Moon Music, 70% of the materials will be from plastic collected by environmental nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup, helping reducing their carbon emissions by 85% compared with traditional 140-gram vinyl and preventing the production of more than 25 metric tons of virgin plastic.
The special notebook edition of Moon Music will be made from plastic collected in Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala before it reaches the Gulf of Honduras and the Atlantic Ocean. As for the CD editions, they will be created from 90% recycled polycarbonate from post-consumer waste streams, reducing production emissions by 78% and avoiding the manufacture of more than five metric tons of virgin plastic. Coldplay recently claimed that they exceeded their initial 50% climate change target. Indeed, their CO2 emissions were 59% less for the first two years of their Music of the Spheres Tour than their stadium tours from 2016 and 2017.
